Walt Whitman High School Hosts Town of Huntington's 2026 Hispanic Heritage Month Celebration

Congratulations to the Walt Whitman High School students recognized by the Town of Huntington during the 32nd Annual Hispanic Heritage Month Celebration on October 13.
Hosted at Walt Whitman High School’s Performing Arts Center, the event was presented by the town in partnership with the South Huntington Union Free School District, the Huntington Union Free School District, and the Huntington Hispanic Advisory Task Force. The task force serves as a liaison between local government and residents, advising the Town Board on issues impacting the Hispanic community.
The evening served as the culmination of the town’s monthlong observance of National Hispanic Heritage Month, celebrated from September 15 through October 15.
Following welcoming remarks from Town Supervisor Ed Smyth, attendees enjoyed performances by the Walt Whitman Jazz Band and the Latino Heritage Club dance troupe, as well as the Huntington High School Chamber Choir and dancers from United Amigos.
South Huntington Superintendent Dr. Vito D’Elia delivered the keynote address, highlighting the importance of the evening’s honorees.
“Hispanic Heritage Month provides an opportunity for us to recognize the richness and diversity of Hispanic cultures, the histories and traditions that have been passed down through generations, and the countless contributions Hispanic Americans have made to our country,” D’Elia said. “What makes this evening especially meaningful is that we are recognizing people in our own community who are carrying that legacy forward. The individuals we honor tonight represent the very best of what it means to contribute to something larger than ourselves. Through their dedication, leadership, and service, they have made a difference in the lives of others while remaining connected to the culture and values that have helped shape who they are.”
During the ceremony, the Community Service Award was presented to James “Jimmy” Calero, Director of Outreach for St. Hugh Parish and St. Patrick Church.
“Serving as Director of Outreach has been a privilege and a calling,” Calero said. “Every day, I’m reminded that our work is a lot more than providing assistance. It’s about restoring hope, and letting those most in need know that they are not alone. This recognition belongs not only to me, but also to the dedicated parish communities, volunteers, and everyone who works tirelessly to serve our neighbors with compassion and love.”
In total, 11 students from across the Town of Huntington received scholarship awards, and nine students received certificate recognition.
