Wildcat Stadium Updates at Walt Whitman High School

After several years of planning and construction, the finishing touches have been added to Wildcat Stadium at Walt Whitman High School, transforming it into a premier athletic complex for our sports teams, student activities, and the entire South Huntington community.
The redevelopment began in December 2023 with the demolition of the old field tower and the removal of the outdated bleachers. The brand-new field tower and press box, completed in June 2024, offers a great view of the action for coaches and photographers. The completely redesigned grandstand provides seating for more than 1,800 people and is fully ADA-accessible—including wheelchair seating and ramp access—ensuring that every member of the Wildcat family can comfortably and safely cheer on our students. Fans have been enjoying the new concession stand at home games, which is stocked with drinks, snacks, and the latest Wildcat merchandise. A comfort station with four restrooms was built adjacent to the field tower in the fall of 2024.
Wildcat Stadium is more than just a place for sports; it’s a celebration of South Huntington’s history.
A newly constructed concrete plaza behind the grandstand provides more standing room viewing, a convenient gathering spot, and easy access to the bleachers. Commercial-grade outdoor picnic tables with seating were installed this spring, giving students a place to sit and enjoy the campus. Wildcat Plaza also features “The Community Walkway,” which allows families to honor the past, present, and future of South Huntington by purchasing personalized bricks. Next to the walkway, welcoming all visitors to the athletic complex, is the distinctive Wildcat “W” logo in the district colors—maroon and white—embedded in green artificial turf.
Wildcat Plaza also proudly serves as the permanent home for our district's 100-Year Time Capsule, buried in May of 2025, preserving our community's legacy for future generations. Right alongside it, we are proudly displaying the bell from one of the district’s original schoolhouses, The West Hills School on Jericho Turnpike, that was built in 1911.
To make way for Wildcat Plaza, the Senior Rock was moved to its new home in the grassy patch directly across from the plaza. The large boulder was donated by the senior class in 2020 and is decorated each year by graduating seniors with the year’s spirit theme. It’s encircled by bricks that boast of the district’s Championship Legacy. Each inscribed brick commemorates a specific team or individual state, Long Island, and county title, celebrating the high school’s athletic achievements over the decades.
Standing tall as the crowning glory of the entire new facility is the recently unveiled bronze Wildcat Statue, a magnificent monument celebrating the district's iconic mascot and 100 years—and counting—of Wildcat pride.
Beginning this summer, our teams will have access to the just-completed second athletic field built adjacent to the football field at Whitman Stadium. This front field will be used for soccer, field hockey, lacrosse, and other athletic activities. It's been challenging with only one field to manage and rotate equitable use for all the groups that need to use it. This brand new addition will provide more space for our athletes to train and compete.
There is no better way to celebrate this incredible transformation than with our students and families. The improvements will be there for everyone to see and enjoy when the Class of 2026 commencement ceremony is held at Wildcat Stadium on June 26th.
Thank you to the entire South Huntington community for your patience, support, and dedication to making this dream a reality. Go Wildcats!
