Dancer and Musician from Walt Whitman Receive 2026 Otto Kahn Award

Congratulations to Walt Whitman High School seniors Jose Canas Garcia and Kate Sabellico on receiving the 2026 Otto Kahn Award!
Each year, Friends of Oheka bestows Otto Kahn Awards to deserving Huntington area public high school seniors who plan to continue their education and training in the fine arts, performing arts and music. Jose and Kate are two of eight scholarship recipients this year who received $2,700 during the special recognition ceremony at Oheka Castle.
Jose Canas Garcia received the Otto Kahn Award for being one of Walt Whitman’s exceptionally talented musicians. Jose's ability to collaborate, communicate and perform on the trombone exceeds expectations. He self taught himself the majority of all brass instruments, truly displaying his musical talent and dedication. Jose will be attending SUNY Potsdam, majoring in Music Education in the fall
Kate Sabellico is a senior and extraordinarily talented dancer at Walt Whitman High School. Kate has grown from a dancer shaped by her technical repertoire to a choreographer that stretches the boundaries of what she can physically do. She embodies artistic bravery with technical expertise, flexibility and physical strength that are admired by her peers and appreciated by her teachers. Kate plans to attend the Boston Conservatory at Berklee in the fall, majoring in Commercial Dance.
