Maplewood Hosts 6th Annual STREAM Saturday Event

The South Huntington School District's Technology and Elementary STREAM Initiatives Departments were happy to host their 6th Annual Family STREAM Saturday at Maplewood Intermediate School on March 7th. The event is a great opportunity for students K-5 and their families to learn about the integration of Science, Technology, Robotics, Engineering, The Arts, and Mathematics through engaging hands-on, discovery-based activities.
The goal of this annual event is to provide a showcase for students to show them what STREAM is all about and engage them in fun activities while promoting collaboration, observation, and problem solving skills. Because the modern workplace requires a higher level of interdisciplinary collaboration, the benefits of STREAM in education are becoming more apparent. Activities associated with STREAM incorporate critical thinking skills, exposure to various media and platforms, improving students’ emotional intelligence and social skills, and encouraging students’ curiosity. This day is designed to introduce all that STREAM education has to offer to students and their families in a fun-filled way.
Students and their families had the chance to participate in two 60-minute workshops that included activities such as Create with SPIKE Lego, Discover Hidden Worlds with Microscopes, Edible Science Challenge, Book Creator Fun for Everyone, Visit A Planetarium, and more. New workshops this year included Al Magic in The Classroom and Home, and Pottery Power! Whether students and their families were applying new technology on their Chrome Books, or getting their hands dirty in ceramics, it was a fun and engaging learning experience for everyone.
It was extremely gratifying as teachers led these exciting workshops for students and their families to enjoy. Thank you to all of our teachers and high school helpers for allowing the day to run smoothly. Thank you to Janine D’Elia, Mari Hahn, and the Technology and Elementary STREAM Initiatives Department for organizing this event!
Families started the day with breakfast before heading to their chosen workshops.
Mrs. Janine D’Elia, Technology Integration Coach at Maplewood, welcomed families to the 6th annual STREAM event.
Stimson Middle School science Teacher, Mr. Morrill guided students as they took their chance at using one of our district’s state-of-the-art dissection tables.
Students explored new worlds as they used microscopes to view various insects and objects up close.
Participants in grades 3-5 built and designed bumble bees with Squishy Circuits playdough to learn the basics of electrical circuits.
Participants in grades 2-5 programmed Dash and Dot robots for a number of different activities, including using an iPad to code the robots to play mini xylophones!
Creating a DNA display with candy means treating yourself to science you can eat!
New for 2026 was Pottery Power! This hands-on pottery session allowed participants to learn basic clay techniques to build their own pot or trinket tray. Guided by an art instructor, participants explored creativity through 3D design while learning about the science behind clay firing.
Participants in grades K-5 visited the mobile planetarium with a special visit from a South Huntington astronaut for the day.
We are always happy to welcome the South Huntington Public Library to help families and students access all the resources available to our community.
We were thrilled to welcome Mathnasium to this year’s event to help families learn more about the programs they offer.
