Neighbors Helping Neighbors: Wildcat Cares at Work

The South Huntington School District came together in a meaningful way as Wildcat Cares hosted its food pantry distribution before the holiday, delivering more than 50 food baskets to families in need across our community.
At the center of this season’s efforts were our Leadership students in grades 9–12, who spearheaded every stage of the process from collection and organization to distribution. Working with intention and care, the students understood that each basket represented more than food but rather a family being supported and seen. This hands-on experience reinforced the values of empathy, responsibility, and service in a way that extends well beyond the classroom.
This initiative was made possible through a generous $10,000 donation from Stop & Shop, with all food purchased through the dedication and coordination of our Life Skills students. Additional food drive contributions were collected across every South Huntington school building, reflecting a district-wide commitment to supporting families in need. We are also grateful for the contribution and involvement of SHYLAX, Tri-M, local Boy Scout troops, and various community organizations who helped strengthen this effort.
The success of this distribution was guided by the leadership and dedication of Ms. O’Neill, Ms. Casey, and Ms. Kenney, whose support ensured that this initiative ran smoothly and purposely.
For our students, this experience went far beyond the logistics of distribution. It offered an honest opportunity to understand the impact of service and to see firsthand how small actions can make a meaningful difference, and to recognize the role they play in supporting their community. These are the types of lessons that will stay with them for years to come.
