Some “Frighteningly Good” Stimson Student Writers Win the Young Writers’ Contest

The creative and eerie short stories of 20 Stimson students have been chosen by the Young Writers Contest to be included in their new published anthology entitled “Fright Club: Twilight Dreams.” It’s a creepy collection of 100-word short stories that feature haunted houses, haunted woods, people who mysteriously disappear, strange sounds in creepy attics, and terrifying creatures and characters. Stories that might have been conjured up in your nightmares!
Stimson Middle School English teacher Dawn Shikarides encourages her students to enter the Young Writers Contest every year because she says it’s a fun, engaging way to get them to see their writing potential. And plenty of her students have had their stories published! The contest is sponsored annually by Young Writers, an organization that wants to ignite a passion for writing in every child. And they use some pretty fun topics to ignite kids’ creativity. This year, entrants were asked to use tension, atmosphere or suspense to write a “chilling mini saga” of up to 100 words. And they were given some story starter ideas like “I didn’t believe in ghosts until…” and “My friends dared me to knock…” for spooky inspiration.
Titles from our winning writers include The Ghoul of the Manor, The Man With One Hand, Where Is He?, The One-Eyed Corpse, and My Last Halloween.
Congratulations to Emma Rose, Fred Scragg, Solomon David, Joseph Lantier, Camila Guervara, Ashley Millman, Sophie Boutis, Peter Massone, Sebastian McCord, Brendan McCord, Sophia Tornabene, Hannah Wilson, Gian Gonzalez, Brooke Rockanakit, Charlie Edwards, Gigi Hiller, Andrew Klein, Valentina App, Gerardo Marroquin, and Paige Zic.
Plenty of Ms. Shikarides’ students have had their stories published!
