We are incredibly proud of Walt Whitman students Nayira Kabarajian, Eliana Montague, Andrew Connolly, Jack Fischer, Alexander Seeloff, Jaren Smullian, Shaun Murphy, Kieran Davis, and Romel Farquharson who have been selected for the Boys’ and Girls’ State program, which recognizes emerging young leaders throughout the nation. Boys’ and Girls’ State have been a program of The American Legion since 1935. These talented students will serve as the face and voice of our school district at the Boys’ and Girls’ State Conference to be held this summer.

American Legion Boys’ and Girls’ State is among the most respected educational programs of government instruction for high school students. Each participant becomes a part of the operation of his or her local, county and state government. At the American Legion Boys’ and Girls’ State programs, participants are exposed to the rights and privileges, the duties and the responsibilities of a franchised citizen. The training is objective and practical with city, county and state governments operated by the students elected to the various offices. Activities include legislative sessions, court proceedings, law enforcement presentations, assemblies, bands, chorus and recreational programs.
