The new Wildcat Art, Theater, and Music Camp is tuning up to begin the last week of July. In its first summer at Walt Whitman High School, this camp was designed in response to students who wanted to explore their artistic side through theater, art and music.

Grades 3-7 will have the opportunity to participate in art, theater and music activities that will engage and motivate them to gain a further appreciation of the Arts in South Huntington. Our students will be able to participate in these activities with the guidance of our very own SHUFSD teachers, staff and experienced student helpers.

“From drawing and painting to 3D work and creative crafts, students will enjoy a wide variety of artistic experiences which will support and expand the already rich arts education that SHUFSD has to offer,” said Camp Director and WWHS Band Teacher Matt Hoffman.

The Art, Theater and Music Camp will be held from Monday, July 24 to Friday, July 28 from 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. The class schedule will be divided into two sessions, the first from 8:05 a.m. to 9:55 a.m., and the second session from 10:00 a.m. to 11:55 a.m.

From individualized music lessons to exploring the Performing Arts Center, to witnessing the inner workings of a center stage production, our students will develop as young artists in whichever avenue they choose - art, theater, or music - or any combination.

Hoffman said, “Overall, we believe this is a well-rounded arts camp experience that enriches and supports our young learners along their Arts journey. We cannot wait for this inaugural year to begin and for many more arts camp experiences for years to come!”

Meanwhile, in the wings is Wildcat Marching Band Camp. Most members of the Walt Whitman High School Marching Band have already started working on this year’s competition program on Tuesday and Thursday nights at the high school. Band Camp officially begins on Monday, August 7th and runs through Sunday, August 13th, wrapping up with a showcase preview performance of this year’s program for family and friends. But even before that, there will be a Mini Camp from August 1st to the 3rd where the emphasis will be on learning and memorizing all the music so the band can immediately start learning drill - the steps and field positions that make up the show - the minute Band Camp starts. It’s a lot of hard work in hot weather but there are always fun and games, and cooling opportunities built in!
