Six Walt Whitman students have been selected for the prestigious NYSCAME/SCMEA 2023 All-County Music Festival this fall. And out of these six talented students, Porter Chetty has also been selected to perform at the NYSSMA All-State Festival in December.

To be selected for NYSCAME/SCMEA All-County, 11th and 12th-grade students must score among the top NYSSMA musicians across Suffolk County. These outstanding music students will participate in three intensive rehearsal sessions, culminating in a concert in November.

Students selected for NYSSMA All-State scored among the top student-musicians across all of New York State. Each year, about 6,500 sophomores and juniors prepare for All-State evaluations in the hope of being selected. But only 600 are chosen for one of the All-State bands, choruses, orchestras and jazz ensembles directed by renowned guest conductors.

“We're so proud of them,” said Band Director Matt Hoffman. “We are happy to have them represent our district. But as teachers, we are lucky to get to work with them on a daily basis, and it’s just exciting to have kids that are ready to play every day. They're very talented and the All-County and All-State ensembles are really quality groups.”
