Congratulations to Senior swimmer Joseph Tonna on earning Athlete of the Month for February! Joseph had fun competing at the States Swimming and Diving Meet in Ithaca where he placed 2nd in the 100m Freestyle, 5th in the 50m Freestyle, and 3rd place in both the 200m Medley Relay and the 400m Freestyle Relay. Joe felt fortunate to be able to compete at States in his final year of high school as the last time competition was held was during his freshman year. Outside of the pool, we can find Joe on the football field and on the Spring track team where he will finish out his athletic career for Walt Whitman. He looks to continue swimming at University of Massachusetts for their Division I team and is excited to have made it this far in the sport. Congratulations and good luck Joe!
Congratulations to Junior swimmer Adelrhany Georges on earning Athlete of the Month for February! Adelrhany also qualified for States where he felt it was great to experience for the first time in his swimming career. “It was invigorating in a sense because I want to be one of the top guys,” he shared with relation to the competitive nature of making it to this elite meet. Adelrhany has been swimming since he was 11 years old for an outside club team that has prepared him for competing for Whitman. In the classroom, Adelrhany enjoys Physics and focusing on his academics and appreciates the overall atmosphere that high school has to offer. Congratulations Adelrhany!
Congratulations to Junior Lizzie Schreiber on earning Athlete of the Month for February! Lizzie is a Varsity Track and Field athlete who has had an exceptional winter, racking up numerous accomplishments over the season. She broke the Triple Jump school record set back in 1994 and remained undefeated in every crossover meet this winter as she claimed the title of League 2 Champion in the 300m and Triple Jump, as well as the Long Island Elite Meet champion title in the 300m dash and Triple Jump. She placed 3rd in the State at the NYS Track and Field Championship, and wrapped up her Winter Track season by placing 5th with her 38' 4.5" jump at the Adidas Track and Field Nationals in Virginia Beach, earning All-American status! Lizzie has been running track since the 8th grade and we’re fortunate to have her compete for another spring season before the start of her senior year. Her favorite part about Whitman is the amount of school spirit and support she’s received as well as her fellow athletes. Congratulations Lizzie!
