It was a big night on Monday, December 6th, 2021, as Walt Whitman’s Varsity Football team took home the 2021 Rutgers Cup for the first time since 1974. It’s been 37 years since their predecessors accomplished the same feat of claiming the Suffolk County Title, and at Monday night’s Suffolk County Football Coaches Association banquet, Whitman was honored for a season of noteworthy accolades and was acknowledged for the achievements of some of the team’s key players. Whitman’s athletes including Nicholas Bottoni, Tyriek Mays-McKoy, Diego Romero, Rasahn Thompson, and AJ Evans were identified as some of the top players in the county, receiving numerous offensive and defensive awards.
One of the evening’s biggest highlights was Coach Robin Rosa receiving the award for Division I Coach of the Year. As the head coach of the Wildcats for the last twelve years, Coach Rosa has created a truly unique football program that empowers both players and coaches alike to strive for greatness. In his acceptance speech, Coach Rosa acknowledged all the individuals who made not only himself, but this team, such a huge success.
Congratulations to Whitman’s athletes and coaches on a truly historic season!
