This year, Walt Whitman High School started offering internship placements with local businesses within our community. Prior to entering the workforce, internships provide high schoolers with valuable experiences that not only look great on their resumes but it provides them with a taste of what their future career choices will be like. The Whitman High School Internship program is having a strong debut year, with over 20 interns currently placed in 14 different locations. Students are gaining a wide variety of experience, from business to art to healthcare settings.
For senior Serena Heddell, this year’s internship opportunity at The Sound Cellar allows her the experience to guide her in her music filled endeavors. “There’s so much that I’ve learned so far and am still picking up as far as new equipment and how to set everything up,” Serena shared of her experience at the local music studio. With aspirations of becoming a sound engineer, Serena is getting first hand experience working with musicians both in the recording studio and at outside music venues. She helps set up the mixer, monitors and speakers, and she researches the gear to get an in-depth understanding of how the equipment works and why they are routed the way they are. Serena has helped with sound at local spots including Napper Tandy’s in Northport and even at the Fall Festival in Huntington Village.
With an interest in sound, Serena enjoys playing multiple instruments including the ukulele, cello, guitar, piano, and bass, and is interested in pursuing the drums next. Her interests in playing a variety of instruments and music theory manifested into her desire to compose. She began working with different programs to record and make her own music, making her time spent at the Sound Cellar, located on Park Avenue, that much more applicable to her future endeavors. Musicians are welcome to book a room at the Sound Cellar for practices and recording sessions and will be in luck to be helped by one of Whitman’s very own aspiring musicians and composers.
