Sunrise Senior Living

with WWHS Intern Corian Colvert

This year, Walt Whitman High School started offering internship placements with local businesses within our community. Prior to entering the workforce, internships provide high schoolers with valuable experiences that not only look great on their resumes but it provides them with a taste of what their future career choices will be like. The Whitman High School Internship program is having a strong debut year, with over 20 interns currently placed in 14 different locations. Students are gaining a wide variety of experience, from business to art to healthcare settings.

Junior Corian Colvert finds an outlet for his creative interests as he interns at Sunrise Senior Living, directly across from Walt Whitman High School. When Corian arrives at the assisted living facility, he spends his time helping the staff facilitate activities for the residents to enjoy. He interacts with the residents during recreation time and game playing and looks for ways that he could be of help to anyone in need. For Corian, this type of experience is definitely worthwhile in that it gives him the opportunity to have real life experience working with seniors in this setting.

As a junior, Corian has his options open as far as which career path he would like to explore. In his free time, Corian likes to sketch cartoons and different characters that display their own unique personalities. He hopes to apply this interest while interning at Sunrise Senior Living by possibly spearheading an art club for the seniors to be involved in. His favorite part about interning are his interactions with the residents and being able to learn about their interests through his conversations with them. From his time spent there so far, Corian is able to hone his interests while engaging with the residents in a meaningful way.
