Puff 2021

Dr. Murphy and his senior team

Congratulations to all of Walt Whitman’s participants in last Friday night’s Powder Puff game. Every year, this event is one of the best-attended evenings that typically takes place right around homecoming, yet with this year’s calendar disrupted by the coronavirus, we were grateful to still hold the annual event before the conclusion of the school year.

The halftime show was definitely something you don’t see every day. With colorful wigs and pressed on nails, the junior and senior boys took to the field, tutus and all, to give everyone in attendance some much loved entertainment. While the senior cheerleaders outnumbered the juniors in the cheerleading competition, the secret panel of judges gave the winning title to the junior underdogs. The game was equally entertaining, leaving spectators on the edge of their seats all throughout. Within the final minutes of the 4th quarter, the seniors made a valiant come back to finish the game in a 30 - 30 tie. The evening really proved to be a win for all!

Thank you to our high school administration, Mr. Graziano, Ms. Hirsch-Backman, Mr. Milazzo, and all the advisors and chaperones for making the evening such a great success. The energy both on the field and in the stands was telling of how excited everyone was to be a part of this always fun tradition, and we are so grateful to everyone who helped make it happen!

Dr. Murphy amps up his senior team before they take to the field at the start of the first quarter.

Assistant Principal and Junior Coach, Mr. Varlamos, went head to head with Dr. Murphy for a night of fierce, but friendly, competition.

Both teams shared space on the sidelines as they saved their rivalry for the playing field.

The junior cheerleaders, though outnumbered, brought big energy to the halftime show and earned the win from the secret panel of judges.

Senior Christopher Scortichini mimics Dr. Bennardo’s weekly wrap-up call as he enters from the 50-yard line to get the senior cheer routine started.

Track star Antonette Pommells used her speed to gain major yardage for the senior team in the second half of the game.

Congratulations and thank you to both teams for an unforgettably fun Powder Puff!
