Congratulations to senior Grace Weigele on signing with Stony Brook University’s track program! Grace has been running track since 7th grade and has been on Whitman’s Varsity team since 8th grade. She has been captain of the Winter and Spring Track teams for two years and holds three school records from her Winter 2020 season. Before the Covid-19 shutdown, Grace ran at the State Qualifying meet at Suffolk Community College where she ran her personal best and qualified for Nationals. “Even though it didn’t happen, it still felt great to qualify,” Grace commented; thinking back to the qualifying meet. Her main events include the 1500m and the 3000m, maintaining the record for each at 4:52.95 and 10:18.41, respectively, as well as 3:08.69 in the 1000m. To keep in sufficient physical shape during quarantine, Grace would frequently go to the weight room at the high school and train three times a week. A cross country runner during the Fall, she continues to practice distance training as well to keep her stamina up. With a hopeful mind, Grace continues to run competitively during the modified sports seasons and encourages her teammates to continue training hard as well. “Even though it’s a slow period right now, this is your time to start training and get stronger.” Grace is looking forward to running for Stony Brook and meeting her new teammates and classmates as she plans to study health sciences.
