The Walt Whitman High School boys and girls volleyball programs hosted their first annual Dezy Strong fundraiser this October in honor of the legendary Sachem volleyball coach, Matthew “Dezy” DiStefano, who created the Dezy Strong Foundation after he learned about his cancer diagnosis in February 2019. The Foundation helps people, especially kids, who are battling cancer.
Thank you to everyone who was able to contribute to this cause. One $50 gift card donated from Uncle Giuseppe’s Marketplace of Melville turned into 15 raffle baskets from parents and local businesses. These raffle baskets, as well as snacks and Dezy gear sales, produced more funds than we expected. Because of your support, we were able to raise over $3,500 for the Dezy Strong Foundation! Thank you all for making this fundraiser so successful.
“Dezy’s passing helped me realize the fragility of life and the privileges I sometimes take for granted,” shared Varsity Volleyball Captain and senior Tyler Phillips, who helped organize this year’s fundraiser. “Going through life’s motions that once seemed mundane and trivial quickly evolved into me realizing what I cherished most. In life, nothing is guaranteed, but thanks to Dezy, I find solace in knowing that although I am fortunate to be in good health, Dezy’s mantra always serves as a guiding principle in my life.” We thank Tyler for encouraging his teammates and those around him to spread Dezy’s positive perspective in all facets of life. We look forward to continuing to host this worthwhile fundraiser for years to come.
