BOE Honors Esteemed Trustee

and Football Team

At our most recent Board of Education meeting, residents, staff and alumni attended the evening event in anticipation of three very meaningful presentations.

The first was a holiday treat with the Oakwood "stars" singing seasonal melodies for the audience, reminding us of all the wonderful ways the holiday season brings complete joy and anticipation to our younger primary-aged children.

The second presentation was quite bittersweet--the recognition of Edward J. Nitkewicz, J.D. as a board member for the past 12 years--who is leaving the District effective December 31, 2021.  Old friends of ours were in attendance, including Mr. Jim Kaden, prior board president for 24 years; Dr. David Bennardo, previous Superintendent of Schools; and Lorraine Deller, Executive Director of the Nassau-Suffolk School Boards Association speaking on Ed's behalf, and former trustees Lisa Brieff and Michele DeGaetano were in attendance as well. Mr. Nitkewicz was presented with a plaque signifying his 12 plus years of service to our district’s board of education and community. “I hope it prompts a sense of pride in your many accomplishments and it reminds you of the vital role you played in revitalizing our district,” expressed Board President, Mr. Ciappetta, upon presenting the meaningful plaque. We will miss Mr. Nitkewicz and cherish the love and devotion he provided to our school community during his many years of service.

The third and last presentation was for our Division I Suffolk County Champion Varsity Football Team with the added distinction of the Rutgers Trophy. “This year Whitman took care of unfinished business, dominating opponents on a weekly basis, winning our first county title in 37 years, our second Rutgers Cup, and first in 47 years, and becoming the best football team in school history,” said the Board President. Our Varsity football players were present at this special recognition with their coaches, and we were beyond proud to honor their successes as individuals and as a team. “We not only congratulate you on an amazing achievement, but we also thank you for the joy you brought us for twelve weeks and the pride you instilled in our community,” Mr. Ciappetta concluded.

The evening began with a special holiday performance by our Oakwood "stars" under the direction of Oakwood's new music teacher, Ms. Lisa Morabito.

Mr. Nitkewicz was presented with a plaque in recognition of his dedicated service as a member on the Board of Education of the South Huntington Union Free School District by BOE President, Nicholas Ciappetta, and BOE Vice President, Laura Carey.

Board members congratulated our varsity football players who were present at this special recognition with their coaches and showed great pride for their season of tremendous successes.
