The Walt Whitman Wrestling Team hosted the Annual Andrew Peers Wrestling Tournament on Saturday, December 4th, packing out the high school’s North Gym. Whitman saw nine of its wrestlers reach the podium, two of which stood at the top proudly with their first place trophies. Congratulations to Jayson Savage, Ryan Maiorana, Nick Campanelli, Jensen Offerman, Andres Valencia, Joe Gervasio and Matt Gervasio who were all runner ups. Congratulations to Grady O’Loughlin and Liam Villanti for claiming first place in their weight classes. Whitman defeated five teams to become the 2021 Team Champions!
The Andrew Peers Memorial Tournament is named in memory of 1988 Walt Whitman graduate Andrew Peers, who was killed in an auto accident in 1994. Andrew was one of Whitman’s most spirited and accomplished athletes in the 1980s. He won All-League honors three times and was All-County in his senior year for wrestling. Andrew was also an accomplished lacrosse attack man, garnering All-League honors.
Thank you to all of the teams who participated in keeping this annual tradition alive!
