Congratulations to Whitman Seniors Valeria Bruzual, Roberto Vasquez Aparicio, and Wendy Morales Cruz who each won scholarships at the Hispanic Youth Leadership Conference sponsored by NYSED! These students demonstrated outstanding academic and leadership skills in the competitive program that gathers the most talented immigrant Latinos in New York State.
As part of the state-wide competition, scholarships were awarded to students with exceptional essays discussing topics of civic virtue and issues related to their countries of origin. Out of twenty scholarships awarded across the state, this is the first time Whitman housed three of those recipients at once. “We’ve been involved in this program for almost 30 years, and there has only been three other students to win,” shared ENL teacher Ms. Haik. “This is the first time three of our students have won in the same year. We could not be more proud” Their essays warranted them scholarships ranging from $1,000 to $1,800 to be used towards their secondary education.
As seniors, Valeria, Roberto and Wendy each have an idea of the next step in their education. Valeria, who’s lived in the U.S. for four years, intends on studying biomedical engineering at Stony Brook University, while Roberto, who has also lived in the states for four years, plans on studying physics. Wendy has lived in the U.S. for only two years and is excited to pursue dentistry at Farmingdale State College. “These three remarkable students are on track to graduate high school only a few years after they first set foot in a U.S. school,” commented high school principal, Mr. Ken Costa. “Their accomplishments are a testament to the tremendous dedication and talent of the ENL team.”
Congratulations to Valeria, Roberto and Wendy on this noteworthy accomplishment!
