Congratulations to Anyiah Walters and Raymond Hoffman.

Congratulations to Anyiah Walters for earning April’s Athlete of the Month! Anyiah runs for Whitman’s Varsity Track and Field Team and has earned this distinction for ranking 2nd in the county for the 100 meter hurdles. Anyiah is in 10th grade and loves how track pushes her to be better because of how individualized the sport is. “I like how you have to work as a team, but it’s different. I don’t have to depend on my team in order for me to win my events.” During the fall and winter months, Anyiah cheerleads and when it’s time for the spring track season, Anyiah runs the 100 meter hurdles, the 4x100 meter relay, triple jump, and the 100 meter dash at individual meets. “I’ve been pushing myself hard since track started and I’m always trying to beat my personal record,” she shared as she reflected on earning this award. As for her time at Whitman, Anyiah appreciates the diversity and positivity that runs throughout the school.

Congratulations to Raymond Hoffman on earning Athlete of the Month for April! Raymond pitches and plays 3rd base on the Varsity Baseball Team as #3. This season, Raymond had 2 wins as starting pitcher, bats first on the line up, and has the highest on base percentages while helping the team score runs. Raymond is in 11th grade and has been playing baseball since he was young and it’s always been fun for him, especially being able to play with this group. He shared, “my favorite part about Whitman is being with my friends. They’re a good group of kids and it’s always fun with them.” Raymond reflected on the season and how the team had a rough start at 0-3 until making a comeback with 6 wins in a row that he believes will give them a spot in the playoffs. With just a few games left in the season, Raymond has faith that his team will do well as they work hard towards making in into the post season.

Post interview update: The baseball team has recently beaten Commack two times this past week and has qualified for this year’s playoffs.
