Congratulations to our Walt Whitman High School 2023 Seniors who were recognized at the annual SAT/ACT Scholar Ceremony & Breakfast. Forty-two students were honored alongside their proud families at the early morning celebration.

Students and their families enjoyed a morning of well-earned recognition and a delicious breakfast provided by the South Huntington School Nutrition Services. Coming together to honor these students, with the addition of their families, brought great meaning to the celebratory morning. "We had the opportunity to recognize our students' accomplishments and excellence in education,” said Principal Ken Costa. “In a few short months, they will join the ranks of so many distinguished alumni who have passed through the halls of Walt Whitman High School.”

The dedication and academic excellence of these students deserves special recognition and celebration. Those in attendance heard inspiring words from keynote speaker, Walt Whitman High School 2022 alum and student at Yale University, Salma Laraki. Salma spoke to the uniqueness of each student saying “Our visions and definitions of success should be individualized. You all are hard workers, and deserve to understand yourselves in a way that works for you.” The recent Walt Whitman graduate encouraged this year’s Seniors to trust themselves as they take calculated risks and to have faith in their abilities to overcome any obstacles they may face. Salma concluded by saying “Wherever you go or how you get there, so long as it is yours, and so long as you are satisfied. You already have the skillset, and you are more than capable.”

Special congratulatory remarks were offered by Board of Education President Nicholas Ciappetta before the scholar students were called up by Walt Whitman High School Assistant Principal, Jon Varlamos, to receive their certificates. In addition to the certificates, each student will have their names inscribed on the SAT/ACT Scholars plaque to be displayed at the high school and commemorate their commitment to education for years to come.
