The 73rd Annual Girls Sports Night District

Written by Liz DeMonte | Mar 5, 2023 5:00:00 AM

For the past 73 years, the Girls Leaders Organization has worked vigorously to put together Girls Sports Night (GSN). Originally, GSN gave young women the opportunity to participate in athletics that were only available to males. As the years progressed and girl’s teams were established, Whitman’s GLO continues to keep the tradition alive.

The criteria for being a GLO member includes; high academic achievement, participation in varsity athletics, hours of community service, as well as dedication to the club and its activities and events. Some of their community services include; Homecoming Carnival and Bonfire, Breast Cancer Awareness, Autism Awareness Walk, Go Red for Women: Women’s Heart Health, Thanksgiving food drive, District Holiday Winter Wonderland, Holiday gift cards for hospitalized children, and St. Baldrick’s - scheduled for March 8, 2023.

GLO leadership, President Alexa Dikeakos and Vice President Shaelyn Scharpf, sent out the following message as well as thanking many for their support:

“After months of hard work and dedication, we have seen our girl's leaders truly grow into becoming young women and role models. All of our captains have put in numerous hours to make this night possible. Their work has truly paid off and has not gone unnoticed. To the girls participating, we hope you had fun and continue to participate in the following years. We would also like to extend a big thank you to our parents and guardians for your endless support and love. We thank you for shuffling us around to our practices.

A big thank-you to all of the custodial staff who made this night possible, Mr. Rogers and the Robotics Club for generously constructing our cheer boxes, all of the amazing proctors, our Secret Judges Panel, and all of our hardworking, and dedicated captains. Thank you to Mr. Costa, Dr. Muller, Dr. Richards, Mr. Varlamos, Mrs. Beckman, and Mr. Castillo for their continued support for Girls Sports Night as well as Girls Leaders. A special thanks to our Superintendent Dr. Vito D’Elia and our Board of Education. And a special thank-you to our appreciated boys helpers and Samantha Regalado for singing our National Anthem.

We would also like to thank Mrs. Mahoney, our advisor, for all the work she puts into GLO and GSN. Anything we have done and will do in the future would not be possible without her! We hope you enjoyed the night."

Congratulations to the 2023-24 Girls Leaders President Courtney McGee and Vice President Riley Mc Donnell, who were announced at the conclusion of this year’s event.

This year's theme was East Coast v. West Coast.

It was a West Coast win in volleyball after the team won 2 out of the 3 sets.

West Coast used all their strength to take the win in Tug-of-War.

East Coast Calisthenics was giving the crowd some New York pride.

West Coast Calisthenics had a catchy routine that won the hearts of the secret panel of judges.

For the first time, both teams took to the court for a game of basketball, paying homage to this year's Varsity Girls Basketball Team heading to the Long Island Championships.

East Coast won for both their Welcome Cheer and Fight Cheer.

West Coast Cheer was feeling the music during their routines.

Senior Musical Chairs is always one of the most competitive events of the evening.

Current GLO Vice President, Shaelyn Scharpf, and President, Alexa Dikeakos (middle left and right), thanked this year's boys helpers who worked diligently throughout the night to set up each event.
