It’s time to start moving athletics back outside again with Spring Sports underway at Whitman and Stimson! Whitman started on March 11th while Stimson kicked off their season on March 25th. The weather made it a challenging beginning for Varsity, JV and Stimson teams that have had to both practice in residual winter weather, playing in cold temps, lots of rain, and gusty winds. April seems to have the potential to warm things up a bit making competition a whole lot more fun.
Boys and Girls Badminton and Unified Basketball still compete indoors at Whitman, with the badminton teams competing in the North Gym and Unified Basketball in the South Gym. All events in both the North and South gymnasiums are now live streamed, for free, on our Athletics Department YouTube page (Walt Whitman Athletics)! Baseball and Softball can be found playing in the outfields of the South Huntington Library, while the Boys and Girls Lacrosse Teams, Boys Tennis, and Boys and Girls Track & Field can all be found out on the fields, courts, and track at the high school. There’s plenty of action at Stimson as well with Boys and Girls Track & Field, Softball, Baseball, Boys and Girls Lacrosse, and Boys Tennis all in full swing!
For the Whitman Girls Flag Football team, it’s an extra special season. The sport is now officially recognized by the New York State Public High School Athletic Association (NYSPHSAA) and that means a chance at a state title. The state championship games are scheduled for June 1st and 2nd at Cortland High School.
While the season has just begun, we are ready to wish congratulations to Seniors Kaitlyn Magerle of Varsity Softball and Iris Hoffman of Girls Flag Football who were named to the Newsday Pre-Season Top Player lists for their respective sports!
