South Huntington Moves Up in Niche Rankings District

The results are in!  Walt Whitman High School and the South Huntington School District have moved up in the annual Niche rankings report. Walt Whitman ranks #5 out of 59 public high schools in Suffolk County. With over 125 high schools across Long Island, Walt Whitman stands at #22 islandwide.


Since last school year’s Niche.com report, the South Huntington School District has moved up from #10 to #8 in the Suffolk County rankings, truly displaying the continued excellence that Walt Whitman and South Huntington is such a great place to live and learn.


South Huntington Superintendent Dr. Vito D’Elia said, “We are extremely pleased in moving up into the top 5 of high schools in Suffolk County, and in the top 10 in overall scores for our school district.  We believe we can keep moving in this direction, and we’re happy that the community feels good about its schools. It also shows a commitment from all of our employees to give all young people in this community a great experience through the South Huntington School District.”


Niche.com nationally ranks nearly 100,000 schools and districts based on statistics and millions of opinions from students and parents. Our high school was rated #5 for Best Public High School in Suffolk County.  With more than 125 public high schools on Long Island, Niche placed Walt Whitman High School at #22 islandwide.  And when looking at all of New York State, Whitman ranked #71 out of 1,255 high schools statewide.


Whitman Principal Mr. Ken Costa says the climb in ranking shows just how special the district is. “Being both the principal and an alumni of Walt Whitman High School, I am overjoyed at how our district is faring among other districts across Suffolk County and Long Island. The fact that we have such a diverse and eclectic group of students, and are able to accomplish such amazing things, is a testament to my staff and my community.”


Our school offers a variety of AP and college level courses, preparing students for post-secondary pursuits and allowing proficiency in their coursework.

“It’s good to know that there is a major ranking system out there to let our community know that South Huntington is doing things the right way. It shows the commitment of all the people employed here in South Huntington, that we have a family atmosphere, and we want all our kids to succeed,” added D’Elia.
