The Walt Whitman Wrestling Team hosted the 25th Annual Andrew Peers Wrestling Tournament on Saturday, November 30th, packing out the high school’s North Gym. Whitman saw 11 of its wrestlers reach the podium, three of which stood at the top proudly with their first place trophies. Sophomore Joe Gervasio, senior Joe Feola and freshman Steven Gomez were all crowned Champions, while our other Whitman athletes placed either in 2nd, 3rd or 4th place. Joe Gervasio also took home the award for the most pins in the shortest amount of time. As a team, the Wildcats beat out the 6 others to be crowned Team Champions for the daylong tournament.

The Andrew Peers Memorial Tournament is named in memory of 1988 Walt Whitman graduate Andrew Peers, who was killed in an auto accident in 1994. Andrew was one of Whitman’s most spirited and accomplished athletes in the 1980s. He won All-League honors three times and was All-County in his senior year for wrestling. Andrew was also an accomplished lacrosse attack man, garnering All-League honors.
