Ms. Workman’s class partnered up with Lowes of Hicksville to revamp Countrywood’s central courtyard this Fall. The project began in October when Ms. Workman’s second graders spent an afternoon pulling weeds, raking leaves, and turning the soil to prepare the courtyard for tulip bulbs and colorful fresh flowers to bring new life to the space. They arranged where flowers would be planted and where benches would be set in anticipation of the work to be done by our volunteers from Lowe’s.

Spearheaded by Lowes managers and project captains Sara Petter and Shanna Walsh, the courtyard renovation was completed in just a few days. Sara Petter, mother of Camden in Ms. Workman’s second-grade class, offered a very generous donation of gardening supplies to bring the plan into fruition. From mulch and fresh flowers to wooden fences painted to look like colorful pencils, the donations were beyond what anyone could have expected for the Primary school’s central space. Thanks to the hard working volunteers, the space experienced a transformation that built on the courtyard’s aesthetics and helped create a unique community bond.

Thank you to our volunteers Sara Petter, Shanna Walsh, Christina Billy, Michael Direnzo, Michael Locavare, John Daly, John Demartinis, Edna Vieira-Riehl, Dave Sobolow, and Les Seaman for all of your hard work and dedication to making this courtyard remodel such a wonderful success! It is with our deepest appreciation that our students have access to such a colorful and vibrant outdoor space where they can continue learning beyond the classroom and understand the value of coming together to create something beautiful.
