The Town of Huntington recently held its 25th Annual Hispanic Heritage Month Celebration where 3 Whitman students received achievement awards.

Yagmur Aykanat is a kind and caring senior with a 94 grade point average. She challenges herself academically by taking AP courses and has a positive attitude and work ethic that have led her to be a member of the Site-Based Management (SBM) Team. She took the lead of the team on, culturing ideas and applying hard work to the team’s various projects. Yagmur is also a contributing member of the Executive Student Government Organization and the Compassion Without Borders program, as well as being a part of Marching Band, Winter Color Guard, Sign Language Club, and the Whitman Voices Choir.

Julianna Licona is a strong and passionate senior with a 97 GPA. Her strength and ambition has led her to strive and challenge herself in Advanced Placement courses. Julianna is an active member of Walt Whitman’s music program, participating in Jazz Band, Pit Orchestra, and Marching Band. She is also a member of the Girls Varsity Fencing Team. Upon graduating, Julianna plans to major in the Performing Arts.

Lia Rosario is a dedicated junior with a grade point average of 83 and is enrolled in many ENL classes while maintaining a high academic average. Lia is a member of the Varsity Fencing Team, Latino Heritage Club, and the ENL Student Mentoring Program. As part of the ENL Mentoring Program, Lia is able to help newly immigrated students access Walt Whitman High School and all it has to offer, as well as sharing some of her experiences when she first arrived to this country 4 years ago.
