Each year, the New York State English Council (NYSEC) recognizes excellence in teaching by presenting awards at its annual conference to English Language Arts educators nominated by their schools and later selected by the Council. This year, South Huntington is thrilled to share that Ms. Kerry Chapman from Stimson Middle School has been selected for the Teacher of Excellence Award.

“I feel honored being recognized for this award and I feel really lucky to be teaching in South Huntington,” Ms. Chapman humbly shared as she reflected on this distinction. Ms. Chapman always knew she wanted to study English and realized she was interested in becoming a teacher after working for a non-profit organization involved in research and fundraising. “I’d always thought about teaching. Even though I worked for a non-profit, I wanted to do something where I had more of an impact.”

Ms. Chapman has been teaching for 13 years and her love for the profession shows. “I feel lucky to work here and I love what I do. I love seeing how trends come and go and how certain things are popular one year and then fade while other trends come back. I always look for new strategies, different techniques and evolving technologies so that I can change things up and keep it fresh,” Ms. Chapman shared as she expressed her excitement for the new school year. She looks forward to meeting her new students and gaining insight from their various perspectives that motivate her to keep her lessons anew.

Congratulations Ms. Chapman on behalf the South Huntington School District on receiving this wonderful and well-deserved recognition!
