Principal John Murphy congratulates his two Athletes of the Month for December.

Congratulations to Gianna Paul on earning Athlete of the Month for December! Gianna is a freshman mid-distance runner who broke two Whitman records this winter season for both the 300 meter and 600 meter races. Coming in 4th place for both events, Gianna ran the 600 meter dash in 1:39.66 and the 300 meter dash in 42.72 seconds. Gianna long jumps during the winter indoor season as well and when it comes time for the spring outdoor season, Gianna keeps up with her mid-distance events by running the 400 and 200 meter races. Gianna’s athleticism runs in the family as she shares that her father ran short distance all throughout college and continues to love the sport as he comes to all of her meets. For Gianna, her favorite event to run is the 300 meter dash because as much as she loves running the 600 meter, she finds that she can start off too fast and wear herself out. In the 300 meter, she is able to keep that strong pace all the way through to the finish line. “Coach would say that I’m hard working and that I get the job done. I can see my dedication to the sport growing as I run at more meets,” says the freshman who is already making a name for herself. Gianna’s favorite part about Whitman are the teachers and their personalities, how nice they are and the way they explain to their students what they need to know.

Congratulations to Raj Shah for earning Athlete of the Month for December! Raj is a senior cross country and distance runner for the Whitman track team. During the 2018 cross country season, Raj was named MVP after running the 5k at Sunken Meadow in 18:09.00. During the winter track season, Raj runs the 1600 meter and 1000 meter races and says he likes the 1000 meter better because it’s a much faster race with less distance to cover. When it comes time to pick up the pace towards the end of any race, Raj looks to see where his competitors are to determine when it’s time to kick into gear. When Raj is leading the race, he’ll shift into full gear when he’s 400 meters out from the finish line to secure he stays up front. Most recently, Raj ran the 1000 meter in 2:41.00 and is looking to break 2:40.00 at the next meet. At the Armory Invitational, Raj placed 4th overall in the mile with a time of 4 minutes and 35 seconds. He’ll be competing next at the League 2 Championships in a week at Suffolk Community College. Looking forward to the spring track season, Raj will be running the 800 meter, 1 mile and 2 mile races. At practice, one could see Raj shaking his teammates hands after their workouts. “Coach would say I’m a good teammate,” Raj shared as he described himself as someone who is there to help pick up his teammates when it comes down to it. As a senior, Raj is interested in studying mechanical engineering at either Stony Brook or Maryland University. As for his time at Whitman, it feels like it went fast. He shared his appreciation for the relationships he’s built with his teachers both in and outside of the classroom.
