Teen pop star and anti-bullying icon Meredith O'Connor gave a special assembly at Walt Whitman’s Performing Arts Center last month, but she wasn’t there performing for the high school students. Busloads of sixth-graders piled into Whitman’s Performing Arts Center to hear Meredith’s strong message about anti-bullying.

“Meredith's anti-bullying message was easily understood and embraced by all of the students,” said Silas Wood Principal Stephen Toto. “Her music and singing was motivational and uplifting and the kids absolutely loved it.” Meredith encouraged students to be a friend to someone who has been bullied and to talk to teachers, guidance counselors and administrators with their concerns as she shared her own personal experience of having been bullied in school. Through her songs, Meredith’s spread the message that “You are NOT alone” and that what makes you different is also what makes you unique and to embrace those differences.

Ten Tigers Kung Fu Academy, located on Jericho Turnpike next to the new Lidl supermarket, sponsored Meredith’s concert in its entirety. South Huntington’s Director of Special Projects Lee Nober has been working with Ten Tigers and is impressed with their commitment to the District. "We cannot thank Ten Tigers Kung Fu Academy enough for their fifth year sponsoring Meredith's Anti-Bullying assembly,” said Mr. Nober. “Clearly, they are committed to offering parents and students many self-esteem building options and strategies."
