The Suffolk County Mathematics Teachers Association 45th Annual math contest was held on March 21st for all middle schools in Suffolk County. From Silas Wood, 45 students entered. On the test, there were a wide variety of questions. There were items on the test from the beginning of the school year to the end of the year, and everything in between. Some of the things that were on the test were proportions, word problems, fractions, and decimals. Last year, Silas had the top 2 people out of more than 1300 kids that competed in Suffolk County. Those 2 students had Mr. Hertz as their math teacher and were on Team 2. The test was 1 hour long and had 50 questions. There were no calculators allowed for this test. Some of the best students were picked by their math teachers to compete in this contest. This year, Team 2 had seven students compete in the annual contest.
Of the seven students, five Team 2 students placed in the top
eleven spots. "So, where's my raise?" jests Mr. Hertz. Maybe next year,
Mr. Hertz…maybe next year.

Ms. Eskell's Language Arts class is in the midst of a poetry unit with the goal of creating written works on a higher level. The key to this kind of writing is simple: dig a little deeper into yourself to find something worth saying. Then, say it in a way that challenges the reader to dig deeper into themselves as well. So far, we have written limericks, cinquains, haikus, and tankas. Our next stop...free verse. We'll keep reaching for that higher level of success! Gearing Up for Finals While students are busy studying for the next chapter test, Mrs. Jespersen is busy preparing work for final review. The sixth grade Life Science final is a cumulative test all students will take in June. At this time, Mrs. Jespersen is preparing a "game-type" review, in addition to the classroom review, called Science Jeopardy! The review game will be accessible through the Internet and will test students' knowledge on such topics as Genetics and Cell Processes. In this way, both parents and students will be able to review at home for the science final. Only one catch…Mrs. Jespersen holds all the answers! Students will be able to play on their own, submit their answers, and then find out which ones are correct or incorrect. Oh…and no real money is exchanged…Sorry! |
