The New York State English Council is awarding the Program of Excellence Award to Walt Whitman’s The Body Electric, coordinated by English teacher Mrs. Kim Latko. The Body Electric is an annual performance hosted at Walt Whitman High School that highlights the incredible talent that is cultivated there. Students and teachers alike use the stage to share original poetry, music, art, and dance that truly showcases the talent that stems from this school.

“Because this is a student generated program, it really acknowledges the work that they do. Everything that The Body Electric presents is original work,” Mrs. Latko shared as she spoke of the program that’s been running since 2001. The program began from students asking the English teacher if it was possible to have an event where students could read their poetry. “Every year I’m amazed at the kids who are quietly walking around in our building who have this talent and have been waiting for the opportunity to show it to everybody.”

As the program grew, there began the realization that they would need a bigger space to present these artworks because of the outpouring participation of the students. Mrs. Latko expressed how the expansion of The Body Electric was an exciting moment for her. “I think it really honors all the years of kids that have come across the stage. I hope that it can reach them so they can see that it has been ongoing and that it's grown and become a part of who we are as a community.”

Congratulations Mrs. Latko and to The Body Electric for this outstanding recognition!
