Congratulations to seniors Jeremy Forman, Gabrielle Girard, Stephen Hong, Aidan Luebker, Katherine Miata, Brady Mondry, Lily Robert, and Logan Slansky on being named Commended Students in the 2020 National Merit Scholarship Program. The program’s mission is to promote scholastic excellence and recognize those students who are chosen based on their skills, extracurricular accomplishments, and potential for success in college and beyond.

“It really is an honor to have eight of Whitman's best and brightest acknowledged for their academic fortitude and prowess at a national level," said Principal Mr. John Murphy. "The students selected this year as Commended Students of the National Merit Scholarship awards are all similar in their academic pursuits but add to the diversity of Walt Whitman High School through their various interests and activities. They are what we hope all students at WWHS strive to become.  It is evident that since an early age these seniors have identified themselves as students in the forefront of academic excellence and we are very proud of them.”

About 34,000 Commended Students throughout the nation are being recognized for their exceptional academic promise. Although they will not continue in the 2020 competition for National Merit Scholarship awards, Commended Students placed among the top 50,000 scorers of more than 1.5 million students who entered the 2020 competition by taking the 2018 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT®).

''Those being named Commended Students have demonstrated outstanding potential for academic success," commented a spokesperson for NMSC. ''These students represent a valuable national resource; recognizing their accomplishments, as well as the key role their schools play in their academic development, is vital to the advancement of educational excellence in our nation. We hope that this recognition will help broaden their educational opportunities and encourage them as they continue their pursuit of academic success."

Congratulations again to these 8 exceptional students!
