Birchwood hosted their first annual spelling bee on Friday, June 21, which was an exciting new way to showcase the school’s most skilled spellers. It took a lot of courage as the top 3 spellers from each 5th grade class came center stage to compete in front of their parents, teachers and classmates. The competition lasted through 8 rounds to determine the school’s “best bee” and it was a close one! Birchwood’s 5th grade teachers Ms. Gruttadauria and Ms. Tohill were beyond ecstatic to host the first annual competition, saying “[we] wanted to elevate the significance of spelling in today’s spellchecking and texting shortcuts world. So we decided that we would hold a Spelling Bee to drum up excitement around this academic skill. [We] think it worked! It started as a low hum in each individual classroom and before we knew it, everyone was buzzing about the classroom winners! In the end, the top 27 busy little bees showed true courage as they competed to become the king or queen bee. We are really proud of all of the competitors and look forward to continuing this tradition for years to come.”

Congratulations to Brandon Villatoro Fuentes for winning first place and Leo Macchia for winning second place, and thank you to all who participated! For parents and family members who were unable to attend, they can view a live stream of the bee on the South Huntington School District's Facebook page.
