Walt Whitman High School has two recipients of the Otto Kahn Award; Jaycee Cardoso in music and Reyha Mete in fine arts. This award is given to selected high school seniors throughout Huntington who are exceptionally talented in some form of the fine arts.

Jaycee Cardoso is a 2019 graduate of Walt Whitman High School and will be attending the Manhattan School of Music in the fall. At WWHS, Jaycee participated in the school’s Symphonic and Chamber Orchestras (concertmaster), Tri-M Music Honor Society (president) and AP Music Theory. He has played annually at OHEKA’s garden parties. Frank Yolango, Director of the Orchestra at Whitman says, “Jaycee has the ability to balance his academic course load and very active extra-curricular activities with professionalism and excellence. I highly recommend Jaycee for your scholarship.” Eileen Buck of Mannes School of Music says of Jaycee, “I believe that Jaycee should win this award because he is a serious musician and violinist with great potential in his playing.”  Jaycee says of himself, “Ultimately, receiving this award would be both a wonderful financial help and a testament to the hard work that I have put into my craft. I firmly believe that the Otto Kahn Award would be essential in helping me pursue my career and sharing my music with the world.

Reyha Mete is a 2019 graduate of Walt Whitman High School and will be attending the Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT) in the fall. At Whitman, Reyha participated in AP Studio in Art, Art Portfolio, Drawing, Painting I and II, and the National Art Honor Society. She also served as an art tutor, attended classes at the Art League of LI and helped with mural painting. WWHS Art Teacher David Rickmers says, “Reyha is a profoundly talented and responsible young person… this young woman is capable of great things. I admire her stubbornness and determination.” Kimberly Eagan Latko, English and Language teacher at Whitman says of Reyha, “This year, Reyha has been notably recognized for her artistic prowess, including a significant showing at the Heckscher Museum… she has a quietly profound impact on those around her.” Reyha says of herself, “A person’s life is a journey filled with bumps, detours, and dead-ends while the route is shaped by the people, places, and experiences that eventually lead to the right path. This award will not only help me and my family with our financial struggles, but it will make it easier to achieve my dreams.”

Jacyee and Reyha are both very talented in what they do as artists. They have brought joy to so many people through their performances and artwork. Both of them are very deserving of this award and have made the South Huntington Family very proud. Congratulations, Jaycee and Reyha for this wonderful recognition!
