Congratulations to Mabel Bassi for being the recipient of the Kris DiMaira Scholarship for 2019. Kris DiMaira graduated from Walt Whitman High School in 1964 and returned after college to become a French teacher in the Fall of 1969.  Kris spoke French beautifully and she accompanied students several times on trips to France. On one such trip, a waiter inquired what region of France she was from!  She enjoyed retelling this anecdote, proud to have been mistaken for a native speaker.
"On a personal note, I was fortunate to have known an exceptional person such as Kris DiMaira. It is a true honor that her family attributes this scholarship to Mabel Bassi who intends to continue her studies in French at Binghamton University where she will get a degree in International studies," shared French teacher Dr. Eikenaar.

Katherine Gotard is the recipient of the following awards/scholarship:
1) Kay Lyons Memorial Scholarship - AATF Suffolk offers the Kathleen Ann Lyons Memorial Scholarship for Excellence in the study of the French Language and Culture to be awarded to a graduating high school senior who has demonstrated excellence in his/her studies of French. The president of AATF Suffolk, Ms. Nancy Wolman, told me how impressed she was with Katherine eloquence.  She mentioned that Katherine’s devotion, dedication and high achievements spoke volume about her.
It is the first time that a student of Walt Whitman High School is receiving this prestigious award. Katherine Gotard was honored on Wednesday, May 28, 2019 at the Distribution des Prix held at Half Hollow East High School.
2) Outstanding Senior in French Award - The American Association of Teachers of French founded in 1927 is pleased to present the Outstanding Senior in French award to Katherine Gotard. Katherine is receiving a gold medal with “Outstanding Senior in French Award, AATF” written on it.
3) Academic Senior Award from the World Language Honor Society - Katherine received this award at the World Language Honor Society Induction Night on Wednesday, May 30.

Congratulations to both of these outstanding ladies!
