Numerous psychological studies have found that children in the eleven to sixteen year old range who study martial arts, and specifically Ten Tigers style of martial arts, have an increased sense of responsibility, are more reluctant to take foolish risks, and have a greater sense of self-esteem. This is why millions of parents are using martial arts to supplement their children’s education. Plus it’s just pure fun! - – Rik Kellerman thumbnail117592

Recently the Ten Tigers Kung Fu Academy was invited to host an anti-bullying program to provide students with the tools on how to recognize bullies and how to defend themselves and others being bullied. Owner Rik Kellerman and business partner Shue wanted students involved in this program to come away with the knowledge of how being confident helps one to not fall victim to being bullied. “If you are confident, you are not going to be the one that bullies choose. Bullies pick on the weak, looking for those with the victim mentality and who are withdrawn and can be easily singled out,” Rik shared as he described how bullies prey on those who are less confident and less likely to stand up for themselves. By standing tall and speaking confidently, students learned how to not fall victim and become singled out by bullies. “Kung Fu is not about fighting. It’s about skill development and becoming better people so that we as a community can become better and stronger,” shared Shue. Bullying can happen to anyone regardless of age, gender, or culture. The program was geared towards showing students how to be an “upstander” rather than a bystander and provided students with skills on how to confidently stand up for someone who is falling victim to bullying. “One of the major reasons we do what we do is to encourage people to believe in themselves, stand up for themselves and support other people who may be weaker, not as strong, or might not speak the same language.” Ten Tigers considers themselves to be a resource for those in need of support, guidance, and information that would make the world and the community stronger and better apt to help themselves and each other.
