Congratulations to February’s Athlete of the Month Maxwell Fischer! This is the second year in a row that he has received both All-County and All-League in fencing, finishing 4th place at this year’s County Championships. Max has been fencing for 7 years and says coming in 4th place this year is a good reflection of how his season has been since coming in 7th place at last year’s County Championships. Max’s favorite part about being on the fencing team is the comradery and how everyone does what is best for the team even though there is a huge individual aspect to the sport. “I’ve acquired a ton of life skills through fencing, whether is calming someone after a loss or being able to congratulate them after a win.” Max was also on the Varsity Golf Team as a freshman, played 3 years of Varsity Badminton, dances, and does color guard for the marching band. As a senior this year, Max hopes to study English and pursue linguistics education and speech pathology. He hopes to continue fencing, dancing and be involved in the arts after graduating from Whitman in June. “There is so much passion behind expressing yourself. What I love about the arts is being able to share what I love dong with everyone else through creative expression.”

Congratulations to February’s Athlete of the Month Joelle Koutsantanou! Joelle is a senior All-Division cheerleader who has been on the varsity team for 5 years. “Cheerleading is not an average sport and to get recognized as one of many athletes means so much to me.” Joelle is a main base and first started cheerleading in 7th grade as her friends and older sister was also involved in the sport. As a middle school cheerleader, joining the team was intimidating at first until the team took her under their wing. “They made me feel like I was a part of something bigger than myself since I was 13 years old,” Joelle shared as she described the team as her second family. Joelle’s favorite part about Whitman is the support she receives from the faculty and staff and how they go above and beyond to make their students feel right at home. As a senior, Joelle looks forward to attending a 4-year college to study business. Congratulations to both of our Athletes of the Month for February!
