The Walt Whitman STEP team consists of hard-working and passionate young ladies with a true love for the art of Stepping. With many of the areas other elite team’s seeking out-of-state competitions, our Whitman team sometimes struggles to find local competitions at their elevated performance level. The energetic team makes their moves look easy but STEP Coach Pam Johnson says, “It’s harder than it looks. It takes a lot of dedication, discipline and time to create the visions that we do.”

To keep their skills fine-tuned, the team ‘Steps’ in smaller locally judged competitions that provide useful critiques that prepare them for additional competitions when they arise. One such recent competition was the Stephanie Belli Memorial Dance Team Festival at Smithtown HS West, where our Wildcat Steppers brought home a trophy. For middle school students interested in ‘Stepping’ when they get to Whitman, Coach Johnson would describe it as “more than just a team, STEP is a family environment where they can feel safe, belonging to something that maybe they thought they could never belong to. It feels like family.”
