On Saturday, January 25, 2019, twenty-five teams from districts across Long Island gathered to compete in the prestigious Department of Energy Science Bowl, held at Brookhaven National Laboratory.   The Whitman team (Ashar Farooq Parker Keller, Aidan Luebker, Eliot Yoon, and Matt Kerner) won their division, beating Comsewogue, Southside (in Rockville Center), Wantagh, and the Knox school (in St. James) before they were eliminated in rounds with the Wheatley School and Commack.

The science bowl is a "Jeopardy!"-style competition with a five-division, round-robin format. In Saturday’s regional competition, the Whitman team answered difficult questions in Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Earth and Space and Mathematics.  The students, who participate in multiple academic activities and sports, have met all year to practice with Coach Allison Cohen.  Students  Ethan Shapiro, Ryan Rowe, Rena Shapiro, Melanie Navarro, and Kyle Dickson, make up the back-up team and have also practiced all year, preparing for next year's competition, and contributing to the winning team's success.

The Office of Energy's National Science Bowl is one of the nation's largest science competitions. Congratulations to our students, their coaches and teachers, and especially their families who support all the hard work required to compete at such a high level.  We now look forward to the Middle School competition, which takes place in March.
