Whitman's field hockey team faced a tough non-league opponent on Monday. Southhampton gave the Wildcats a real test winning 5-0. "The girls have the skills to win,” said coach Karen Schmitt. "It's translating those skills into plays on the field. It's going to be about team chemistry."

The Southhampton team featured Keeling Pilaro, a freshman boy who has successfully fought a ruling, handed down last spring, banning him from on playing what is typically an all-girls squad.

The Wildcats open their season at home on Wednesday, September 12, when they go up against Smithtown East at 4:45.
