Congratulations Graduates

“My request goes to the core of the mission of this district and is embodied in our motto ‘Creating the leaders of tomorrow’: Don’t leave the compassion, empathy, and generosity that you have so often demonstrated behind as you leave this building today. Instead, let today’s commencement mark the beginning of a lifelong commitment to volunteerism and civic responsibility. You represent the promise of tomorrow.” – BOE President Nicholas Ciappetta.

“You are the 486 wonderfully intelligent, richly diverse, incredibly compassionate, remarkably successful men and women that have fueled our district’s success and put our South Huntington community on the map for scholastic, artistic, musical, athletic and leadership excellence and today the spotlight is on you.” – District Superintendent Dr. David Bennardo.

“Over the last four years, we have etched ourselves indelibly across the school, and in turn, the school has etched itself into our hearts,” - Co-Valedictorian Joseph Van Gostein (left). - “I would have never dreamed of being able to make my own cringe-inducing mixtape in a professional recording studio in my high school as a shy freshman. That’s a testament to the unique creative space that is Walt Whitman High School.”- Co-Valedictorian Joshua Joseph.

With threatening sky’s overhead, it seemed an easy call for our 486 seniors to begin the next step in their lives from the relative safety of Walt Whitman’s North Gymnasium, a room they have all shared together many times over the past four years. With an overflow crowd enjoying a live video feed in the air-conditioned comfort of the Performing Arts Center, Whitman’s eighty-eighth commencement got underway.

Emceed by Assistant Principal Jonathan Varlamos, students, guests, and family members heard from Board of Education President Nicholas Ciappetta, District Superintendent Dr. David Bennardo, and Whitman Principal John Murphy. The two-hour ceremony also featured Whitman’s Senior Class President Jack Anest, and this year’s co-valedictorians, Joseph Van Gostein and Joshua Joseph, who, along with their 2018 senior classmates, began a new and promising chapter in their young lives. The Walt Whitman Symphony Orchestra, led by Mr. Frank Yolango ushered the seniors in and out of the ceremony that also featured the Whitman choir led by Mr. Steven Altinel.

“The Class of 2018 has succeeded in spite of current affairs and has become outstanding young adults that our community can be proud of,” said BOE President Nicholas Ciappetta. “You provide an example for our leaders to follow, not the other way around. Whenever I worry about the direction of our country, your actions reassure me that the future is bright. Whenever I hear about an unconscionable act of evil, you reaffirm my faith in humanity.”

Congratulations to the Class of 2018
