On Wednesday, June 6th, our Walt Whitman learning family enjoyed a grand year-ending dinner in honor of our Walt Whitman Ambassadors Club. “It was a great night and it showed how special our students here in South Huntington are and how big their hearts are,” said Dan Lombardo, Special Education Chairperson. This dynamic program, which represents one of our proudest district activities, pairs special-education students with their typical peers for activities that build lifelong relationships and understanding within the school community.

The Ambassador program has grown exponentially in the past year. “Once students hear about us and what our ambassadors do and the impact they have and the great feeling they get from coming out, we’re getting students all year long that keep joining," said Lombardo.

Coordinators Corinne McLaughlin, Cathleen Kiernan, and Ken Anderson also share in the success of the program. Doing a great job as well, are the three Co-Presidents; Matt Williams, Anne Rodriguez, and Sean Smith.

“I want to thank Mr. Edward Nitkewicz for his support in getting this program started and Dr. Bennardo and Dr. Harris for all their support in keeping it going,” concluded Mr. Lombardo. “It is heartwarming to see just how inclusive and warm our students can be as they prove that hope springs eternal in the souls of this next generation,” said Dr. Bennardo on his weekly newsletter to the community.
