Mentoring Works

Mentoring is about consistently showing up and building a friendship through shared activities and is a shared opportunity for learning and growth.

By being a consistent adult presence in a young person’s life, mentors can offer advice, share life their experiences, and help a young person navigate challenges.

January was National Mentoring Month and the South Huntington School District was awarded a generous grant from Mentor New York.

“Our Student Services team offers the utmost gratitude to the men and women of Mentor New York,” said Deputy Superintendent Dr. Jacci Harris.  “This generous group of professionals honored our district by selecting the South Huntington Project Excel Program as the recipient of their prestigious Program Mini-Grant.  It is so nice to know that the good work of our Project Excel students and staff are recognized by such a noteworthy group of individuals.”

Project Excel Program Coordinator Mr. David Perkins tells us that in January, twenty-six students from Birchwood and Maplewood Project Excel went bowling with their mentors, and for some students who had never bowl before it was a priceless experience.

Thank you Mentor New York, your generosity has richly added to the quality of our students’ experiences.
