David Costa, at 152lbs, can catch anybody at anytime as long as he believes he can do it. His first round match against Kiernan Derway of Kings Park will tell us a lot.

Sophomore Herson Cisneros will have a first round bye in the 113lb class. While it’s his first trip to the County Tournament, the weekend is an opportunity to gain championship caliber experience.

Whitman’s Varsity Wrestling competed in the League 2 Tournament last weekend at Bayshore HS. Seven Wildcat wrestlers earned All-League honors and will compete this weekend in the Section II County Championships to be held at Suffolk Community College Brentwood Campus, conveniently located just South of the LIE on Wicks Road.

Congratulations to Herson Cisneros, Tom DeGaetano, Elvis Vasquez, Peter Marion, Joe Feola, David Costa and Mondell Brandon.

Varsity Coach Vincent Altebrando gave us some insight into our Magnificent Seven.

Herson Cisneros- He’s got a strong will to win, a real go-getter, he’s determined and very tough.

Tom DeGaetano- He’s so committed to wrestling, a real hard worker in a tough weight class, Tom is our most knowledgeable and savvy wrestler.

Elvis Vasquez- Improved greatly over the past year, he’s slick with great mat savvy, he beat some top quality kids to get to his first All-League title.

Peter Marion- Extremely talented and explosive, Peter has a great desire and as he progresses there’s no telling what he can do.

Joe Feola- Tradition and family history come with an uncanny style and he also possesses excellent mat sense. He always knows where he is, a great battler and just goes and goes.

David Costa- shows that with tremendous desire and work ethic, you can do well. He’s a strong, tough, hard-working senior who could surprise some better wrestlers at the counties.

Mondell Brandon- Mondell won the Peers Tournament and is one of the top competitors in the 285-weight class. He was out for a good part of the season, but has battled back from an injury could surprise some wrestlers.

“This is the toughest wrestling tournament anywhere in order to qualify for the NY State tournament,” said Altebrando. “All seven have the potential to do well, but every match is going to be really tough so they have to be mentally ready to go.”

"We knew going into the season that we're in one of the toughest leagues in Suffolk County'" said Altebrando. "At one point every one of the teams in our league was ranked in the top 20 in the county, but the kids never gave up, they worked hard, they improved every day, and we have seven guys qualify for the County Tournament which is above average for the county."

Good Luck Wildcats at the Suffolk County Championships!
