The South Huntington Teacher of the Year Awards were held on Wednesday, January 31st at Walt Whitman’s Performing Arts Center. Family, friends and the community joined in acknowledging this year’s outstanding teachers.

Emceed by South Huntington’s Personnel Administrator Mr. Frank Fallon, this was a much-anticipated evening as the South Huntington Board of Education and the district’s administrators gave well-deserved recognition and praise to their top teachers. Joining the Board of Education and administration in honoring our Teachers of the Year was our new Town of Huntington Supervisor Chad Lupinacci.

Congratulations to:

Annmarie Bunce - Walt Whitman High School’s and South Huntington’s District-wide Teacher of the Year-  “Her empathy shows no bounds, showing a warm smile and unconditional love to foster confidence in her students to succeed. Ms. Bunce has the innate ability to make students feel as if they are the most important people in the room. She is the driving force within our building and a primary reason for our school’s success.   One of the most resounding things I heard was quite simple but powerful, “Ms. Bunce was the best teacher I ever had.” While that message seems so simple, it is one of the greatest things that can be said about a teacher’s impact.” – Principal John Murphy

Jennifer Yonkers - Birchwood Intermediate School- “Jen understands that children learn best when they are actively engaged in their learning. Jen plans and implements lessons that are exciting and engaging. She strives to ensure that her students are taken care of emotionally, socially, academically and medically. Jen creates an atmosphere that fills her classroom with comfort and warmth. Jen models collaboration, she shares her time, her resources, her smile and her knowledge with her colleagues. Jen will research topics for her colleagues and share whatever she finds with any of them. She is Birchwood's version of Google.” – Principal Anthony Ciccarelli.

Kristin Trapani- Maplewood Intermediate School- “I don’t think any educator would disagree that one of the main keys to success in the classroom rests with the ability to plan thoroughly for instruction.  Kristin excels in this area and she successfully leaves no stone unturned in her efforts to provide quality instruction and equitable balance in lesson composition. One parent is quoted as having written, ‘Mrs. Trapani is an outstanding teacher who has helped my children thrive socially, emotionally, and academically.’  No finer tribute could possibly be paid to a dedicated teacher.” – Principal Vito D’Elia.

Marissa McCord- Stimson Middle School- “Ms. McCord is a Whitman graduate, who was taught by our district’s Teacher of the Year, Ms. Bunce.  Dig even deeper and you will find out that her twin children are here tonight, to of course support mom, but also to support THEIR teacher, Ms. DeNuzzo, Oakwood’s Teacher of the Year.  Perhaps this serves as the greatest compliment South Huntington can get.  A teacher that chooses a career in the district they graduated from and THEN selects that same community to raise their family.” -Principal Edwin Smith.

Patricia Trebour - Countrywood Primary School- “Patricia integrates creative, innovative technologies into her math lessons to enhance learning opportunities for her students.  She is deliberate in providing tasks that give her students an opportunity to understand math concepts in a purposeful, meaningful way.  Her calm, consistent teaching style and her ability to maintain her standards contribute to not only her students’ math skills, but also encourage risk-taking and building their self-esteem. Trish Trebour is a role model for all children, setting the standard for exemplary service and selfless dedication to the community. " – Principal Barbara Kenney.

Jeannette DeNuzzo - Oakwood Primary School- “Her classroom has served as an arena for Common Core instruction to teachers from several school districts, parents, and New York State Education. She is eager to try new strategies and learn from them. Her classroom is a welcoming place with a positive environment that is conducive to personal growth and academic success. She sets high goals for all her students with parents saying she is kind, understanding and caring, someone with a smile on her face at all times!” – Principal Eileen Kerrigan.

Margaret Silvera - Silas Wood Sixth Grade Center- “Ms. Silvera is an accomplished violinist and has shared her love of music and inspired her students to work hard in order to be the best musician and person they can be.  She has the capacity to reach musicians at all levels and with varied strengths and learning styles.  Her enthusiasm, love, and passion for music, teaching, and her students shine through each day that she walks into her classroom.  She is a team player who collaborates with her department to help make Silas Wood a musical learning environment. In short, Ms. Silvera is a vital part of the Silas Wood team." – Principal Steve Toto.
