Whitman’s Boy’s Varsity Basketball team sits in the middle of League II with three games left to play in the regular season. Also sitting next to the Wildcats is Riverhead; so last Friday night’s game in the South Gymnasium turned into a very important win for the Wildcats.  The Riverhead/Whitman matchup was a game of two halves.  In the first half, Riverhead shot the ball very well and made eight 3-point field goals and scored 42 points by the end of the half. The players and coaches– Tom “Fitz” Fitzpatrick, Ray Eatmon, and Curt Russell– made a few adjustments in the locker room.

The second half saw the Wildcats come out more confident and focused as the team committing fewer turnovers on offense and defensively played determined to win the game. “The team bought into playing a more aggressive defense starting in the second quarter,” said Coach Fitzpatrick.   “When Leevon Black, Craig Stockfeder, Jalen Marks, Mike McIndoo, and Jon Lew entered the game, we were contesting shots more and settling the tempo down on offense.” The Wildcats held Riverhead to 16 points and only two 3-point field goals in the second-half. “The defensive pressure on the ball was better and so were our defensive rotations,”

Coach Fitz was very happy with the guard play of Mike Alosi, Jordan Lyons, and Kendall Wilkerson Ferguson in the second half, and inside, the duo of Cedric Gordon and Griffin Mcnally were terrific. The team is also getting great contributions from Juniors Wendley Jean Baptiste and Dachan Thompson this season.

"The crowd was great and Cedric Gordon had them erupting at the end with a game-ending dunk to put smile everyone’s face to seal the win,” said Fitz. “I told the guys it was an old-school win, and that the teams of the past would have been proud of their team effort and intensity."
