One of the great challenges of a new school year centers around developing the bus schedule that transports the six thousand students to and from schools in the District. The first days of school are a challenge at any school district. Parents of younger students often times wish to meet their child’s driver, and frequently take pictures of their child as he/she boards the bus. As common as this is, it can affect the timeliness of the bus route and the scheduled pick up times of the next stop.

Additionally, the number of new entrants or late kindergarten registrations may cause route changes late in August after schedules have been developed.  If the capacity of a bus exceeds a particular limit, other routes may be affected.

Mr. Mike Trelfa, South Huntington’s Director of Transportation, is responsible for 125 vehicles in the district. His role is responsible for the transportation of students in public, private and parochial schools in our community. Additionally, children who have special needs, requiring vans or other forms of transportation, are scheduled by the Transportation Office.

Does your child play a varsity sport or has he or she gone on a local field trip? All of the children’s transportation needs are organized by this important branch of the school district. Fortunately for Mr. Trelfa, a veteran of thirty-three years of administrative experience, he has a team of dynamic colleagues. Ms. Laurie Caruso and Ms. Meredith Ross are valuable members of the transportation team.

This column salutes these three individuals and all of our bus drivers, who play such a critical role in the safe transportation of our students.
