The desire to help others runs deep with Whitman senior Shelbi Wuss. Balancing a full slate of academic rigors and playing three sports a year, it’s amazing she finds time for anything else. “Working with the Top Soccer program is very humbling,” said our 2017 Valedictorian.  “The students are always happy to be there and work very hard at improving their soccer skills. I feel like I’m making a difference in their lives at something they really love.”  Helping other people is not unusual for someone who wants to become a pediatric surgeon. Appropriately enough, last summer Shelbi was named ‘Surgeon General’ of the prestigious ‘Girls State’ program.

We’re not surprised to learn she’s an active reader, historical fiction and fantasy her favorites. But when it comes to music she enjoys it all, except before a track meet. This is when she ramps up with popular movie scores…Remember the Titans ‘Aint no Mountain High Enough,’ by Marvin Gaye seems appropriate for our long distance runner.

Shelbi played soccer for the Wildcats, helping them past round one of last season’s playoffs earning All-Conference and All-County Academic as well as our Wildcat Scholar Athlete for the fall season.  News12 awarded her their Scholar Athlete of the week in early February and shorty after that she signed her letter of intent to run track for the Eagles of American University in Washington DC next fall.

Moving from winter to spring track, Shelbi has worked hard breaking many school records and continually setting personal bests’ for herself. Just last week at the Westhampton Invitational, the senior captain broke and set new school records in both the 1500m (4:46.52) and the 3000m (10:23.92).  Shelbi placed 1st in the 3000m and 3rd in the 1500m.

Varsity track coach Rufus Shepard calls Shelbi a ‘cool customer,’ and along with her calm demeanor and desire for helping others it’s not surprising that Shelbi attributes her Valedictorian award to everyone who helped get her there, starting with her Mom and Dad.  She is a member of the Science Bowl team and President of the National Honor Society. Shelbi is also a New York State Scholarship for Academic Excellence and SAT/ACT Scholars Club awardee.
