From Interim Personnel Administrator Frank Fallon:

Those who know Helma Adde, Birchwood Intermediate School’s nominee for Teacher of the Year, respect her dedication as a fourth grade teacher. Her reputation as a hard-working and caring teacher has garnered the respect of students, parents and colleagues.

But there is another side to Ms. Adde, elementary teacher. She is an emerging documentary filmmaker. Her film, “Our Last Stand, One Woman’s Journey to Reveal the Plight of Christians in Iraq and Syria” has received worldwide acclamation as an important statement on the crisis in the Middle East.

During the summer months, Helma and her film crew traveled to Iraq and to Syria to meet with families in refugee camps fleeing ISIS. The conditions were difficult for her, as well as the refugees, as scarcity of basic needs existed in these areas. Still she persevered to tell their story.

As a result of her sacrifices in making this film, which brought attention to the plight of the refugees, she was named Humanitarian of the Year by the Assyrian Chamber of Commerce. To many throughout the world, Helma Adde is a journalist and filmmaker making important statements on conditions in the Middle East. To those in our schools, she is a wonderful role model, particularly to young girls, as she tells her story and follows her dreams.

Congratulations, Helma!
